The Boy Who Refused to Stay Sick

Long before Oral Roberts became known for massive healing crusades, he was simply a desperate teenager in Oklahoma, confined to bed with advanced tuberculosis and a stutter so severe he could barely order food in a store. Doctors had quietly stopped expecting him to recover, and his family had begun preparing for the worst.

What set the stage for his healing was not the tent meeting itself, but a shift that happened in his heart beforehand. His brother Elmer kept telling him that God still healed today, and slowly Roberts moved from resignation to expectation. He began to believe, even flat on his back, that his story was not over.

That inward decision, made in weakness and without any physical evidence yet, is the essence of faith described in Scripture: the substance of things hoped for. Roberts later taught that healing often begins as a settled conviction in the heart long before it becomes visible in the body.

When he was finally carried into the revival tent, the faith he carried in was not manufactured on the spot, it had been building for weeks. The instant restoration of his lungs and his speech was the outward confirmation of an inward faith that had already taken its stand.

Roberts spent the rest of his life teaching that same principle to millions: faith is a decision made before the answer arrives, and it is that decision God consistently honors.
