Calling is discovered, not assigned

Oswald Chambers had a particular irritation with what he called the "fever of fretting", the anxious waiting for God to hand down a specific assignment before a person would consent to move. He saw it everywhere and considered it a misunderstanding of how calling works.

His position was that calling is not an appointment handed down from outside your life. It is something that crystallises from within it, through ordinary faithfulness. The person who is attentive, obedient in small things, and available tends to discover their calling by looking back, not by waiting for an announcement.

Chambers was himself an example of this. He did not set out to write the most-read Christian devotional in history. He taught, he preached, he went where he was asked to go. His calling became clear to others after his death, when his wife assembled the notes of a life lived without spectacular direction.

The practical implication is uncomfortable for anyone waiting to feel certain before acting. Chambers argued that the expectation of a dramatic calling experience often functions as a spiritual delay tactic, a way of deferring obedience until conditions feel more suitable. He thought conditions were rarely going to feel suitable.

What he offered instead was this: be faithful in what is already before you. Pay attention. Respond. The shape of your life will become clearer through the movement than through the waiting. Most people, he wrote, are looking at the horizon when the call is standing directly in front of them.
